Artificial Intelligence

The Director at the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), Lisa Osofsky, has recently announced her plans to utilise artificial intelligence in order to deal with fraud cases that are data- heavy.

Osofsky, the former FBI Lawyer discussed the SFO’s plans in her first speech since taking on the chief role:

“With the new eDiscovery platform, we’re starting to use across all of our new cases, we’ll soon bring a range of machine learning and AI-based technology assisted review features to our investigations”

“This should creative even greater efficiencies, and potentially help us reach charging decisions sooner, and shorten the time it takes to progress to trial.”

She also discussed an example of how artificial intelligence allowed for an 80% decrease in costs during the Rolls Royce case in 2016, showcasing the benefits to this new technology.

The head of the SFO also vowed to implement plans during her five-year term, firstly making sure the UK is established as a “high-risk place” for those who commit sophisticated crimes. She also stated that one of her main targets will be to focus on deferred prosecution agreements, as well as maintaining the independence and prominence of the SFO, with the backing of the attorney general.
